The article on Sci Am has lots more to it than what meets the eye. It is a carefully written one (I ahve read others which use a more dry and circumspect language in brutally presenting facts and figures in support and otherwise) which deeply inquires about causal relationships when isolated from other competing external influences. I would take a stance and say that it has arguments in support and some of the limitations have also been covered. I wouldn’t say it is good theory or bad theory. I am simply not qualified to say so. It is normative and at the same time relative in comparison. However, I still state that it contributes towards theory building and in opening up several studies that either confirm or disconfirm the evidence, adding to the body of knowledge and research.

They say that there is nothing as practical as a good theory. (Kurt Lewin).

Do you mean to say that if there is no "Causal" relationship , then there is no theory ? what if there is only association (What most of OB/OT theories are...) ?
Also what about the falsifiability ? Article points out that it is hallmark of good theory. (http://www.www.aom.org/uploadedFiles/Publications/AMR/VandeVenNothing.pdf) ..

By the way Article is very good and it is really good that we are discussing theory building on such forums.
